HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) - A new effort in Kentucky hopes to get rid of millions of dollars worth of unclaimed property.
Kentucky State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach came to Madisonville Tuesday to talk about the Treasure Finder program.
Over $1.7 million in unclaimed property is owed to 6,400 of Hopkins County residents.
That could mean some unexpected cash for families in a tough time.
The Treasure Finders program uses volunteers in local communities to contact people listed in a state database that have unclaimed property.
Hopkins County is the seventh county in Kentucky to participate in the program.
Treasurer Hollenbach says the goal is to initiate the program in all 120 counties.
We are hopeful to get some sizeable claims back to some people," Hollenbach told 14 News. "And hopefully people will be surprised and very happy that they have some money floating around out there"
In Hopkins County on November 10, there will be a phone bank set up with volunteers who will contact people who have unclaimed property.
