OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - Kentucky lawmakers pass a bill to raise Kentucky's high school dropout age from 16 to 18.
House Bill 301 drew endorsements from first lady Jane Beshear and basketball player, Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
The bill would raise the dropout age to 17 in 2013, and to 18 the following year.
Owensboro Public Schools support this bill and say Kentucky can't afford to have kids drop out.
"Most of the students who drop out have significant personal issues in their life and there are things that sometimes the school system, and child and family can't overcome without additional resources," Owensboro Public School spokesperson David Johnson said. "So with this bill, if it passes, the one thing we want to talk to state government about is to make sure we have the resources to help those kids."
The House passed the bill 94 to 6 and it now heads to the Senate floor.
