We could know this afternoon what the Public Safety Subcommittee will decide regarding law enforcement in a merged Evansville/Vanderburgh County.

The subcommittee heard from Police Chief Brad Hill and Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams on Monday, and decided to take some time to review their options before making a decision.

Both Hill and Williams have said they would rather see law enforcement left alone if the city and county merge, however both created plans upon the urging of the subcommittee members.

Under the Sheriff's plan; certain facilities, administrative positions and training programs could be combined.

The Sheriff has stressed throughout the process that the chief law enforcement officer should be directly elected and responsible to the citizens.

Chief Hill's plan calls for having Evansville Police gradually take over patrols for the entire county.

The Sheriff's Office would still overseeing the jail, serve papers and provide security for the courts.

The meeting is scheduled for 3:00.
