POSEY CO, IN (WFIE) - The Sitran Company out of Benton, IL plans to build a $60 million coal loading complex in the area of Carson School Rd. and Darnell School Rd. in Marrs Township.
The company says around 50 permanent positions will be filled including construction jobs.
The $60 million facility will be used to transport coal from IL to Posey County and then along the Ohio River.
Not only will the construction bring dozens of new jobs, but there is also around 50 permanent jobs on tap to run the facility which means good news for the county.
"Attracting more people to work," Posey Co. Commission President Scott Moye said. "Attracting new families into the community. Blossoming our school district."
Moye says the $60 million investment Sitran made to build a coal transportation facility will give Posey County the economic boost it needs.
"Which will employee 45 to 50 full time employees when it is up to full scale in two years," Moye said. "There is going to have to be a bridge built, an overpass, a lot of rail spurs, a lot of holding facilities."
Moye says the Ohio River will see an increase in barge traffic when the facility is done.
Twenty two barges full of coal will transported per day.
"All coal will be brought in by rail from Illinois and off loaded into a barge," Moye said.
Moye says Sitran plans to start construction right away, but still needs to obtain a few more building permits.
Moye says instead of Sitran coming to county for tax abatement or TIF dollars, the company plans to offer the county money to upgrade roads near the facility.
"We're going to get half a million," Moye said. "The range of 450,00 to half a million dollars to upgrade what we call Ford Rd. and Carson School Rd."
As construction gears up, Moye says he keeps marketing the county's spot on the Ohio River to attract more business.
"There is companies looking at this area on a daily basis," Moye said.
The commissioners will meet this coming Tuesday to vote whether or not to close a portion of Carson and Darnell School Rd. to aid with the construction of the project.
