Just a month on the job, and, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation's new superintendent is already making big changes.
Dr. Vince Bertram says he has a bold vision for the EVSC, and Monday he received unanimous approval to start making changes even before the start of the new school year.
His first major change will be to rework how the school corporation tackles the federally mandated restructuring for the four schools who are failing the No Child Left Behind standards.
Dr. Bertram says, "What we wanna provide is really the support for those schools to move forward."
The school system had been using federal and state dollars to put more experienced principals in those schools, but will now pull those back in favor of a new, five member School Intervention Team, with two members picked from within the system, and three outsiders coming on board.
Bertram says, "What their responsibility will be is to go out in the schools and help identify, with that staff, the strategies needed to move forward and then to align the resources to get that done."
Dr. Bertram is also looking to lighten the load of his predecessor, and now Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bob Yeager, "The deputy superintendent oversees daily operations, chief financial officer, chief operating officer and that's really an impossible task."
Under the new system approved Monday night, the school system will add a new chief academic officer to oversee curriculum, and a new chief financial officer tasked with educating the public on how the $200 million budget works, and finding ways to save taxpayer dollars.
The new CFO position is likely to satisfy local taxpayer advocates on two fronts. First, creating more transparency to the budget, something they've asked for a long time. And second, it will do so without any additional cost to next year's budget, a budget that's projected not to cost taxpayers any more than it did this year.
Dr. Bertram says he hopes to find candidates to fill both new jobs as soon as possible. The EVSC school year starts in two weeks.
