ILLINOIS (WFIE) - Truckers will soon be legally able to push the pedal to the medal on rural interstate highways in Illinois.
The speed limit for rigs weighing over four tons is increasing to sixty five miles an hour on January 1.
The new speed limit will also allow campers and those hauling a trailer to travel at the same speed as other vehicles.
It's aimed at maintaining a consistent speed limit for all vehicles.
The cost is about $75,000 for the state transportation department to replace the current signs posted along the interstate.
"We've got 55 signs that we've got to take down," IDOT representative Keith Miley said. "And they're scattered over a 185 miles of interstate. We'll start doing that January 4."
Transportation officials say it will take about a week to switch out the signs in southern Illinois.
